Zelda to have motion sensor controls!

June 4th 2006 05:22

Link has been present on the Nintendo platform since Nintendo’s beginnings, and his new instalment hitting both Gamecube and Wii looks pretty interesting. What makes this upcoming title so interesting is not only that it is another Zelda game, but more importantly its use of the motion sensor controller on the Wii.

News reporters were shown this treat at the recent E3 expo held in Los Angeles. Players can use the Wii controller (or remote) to move around, fire a bow, do some fishing, lift some crates and even strike some enemies. When firing a bow for example, players will aim via moving the remote to the screen then holding a button which causes a sound to be heard from the remote noting you when to release. Yep…you heard me right, the actual Wii remote has its own little speaker and firing a bow will emit a stretch and release sound.

Striking enemies can be done by ‘jabbing’ the controller forward and back. Throwing a crate can also be done by flicking the controller in a particular direction which causes the crate on screen to follow the same path. If that wasn’t enough, a vibration feature is also included in the controller so when those jabs hit, the player can feel its response.

Wow, although Wii doesn’t look as technically powerful as the Xbox 360 or the upcoming PS3, players must really ask themselves if graphics or gameplay counts in relation to entertainment values. Personally, I think this controller sensor application found in the Wii is very innovative but might get old pretty quick. Gamers are lazy (a bit of a stereotype I know) but flicking the controller around for a few hours might get tiresome. Children on the other hand will get a great joy from playing such a title (when they understand how the concept works) and may as well be the ‘new technology’ for gaming itself and become mainstream in the future.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is scheduled for release by the end of this year (possibly early next year) on both the Gamecube (without motion sensor capabilities) and the Wii.

Wow! That's pretty cool stuff.

But like you said, the novelty factor could wear off sooner or later...

I'm still standing firm on the PS3!

yeah the motion sensor gameplay could become tiring...but then again...imagine playing golf with the sensors (even though it has already been done). Would still be awesome!
