Everyone’s favourite archaeologist named after a dog is back for a new adventure. In the Staff of Kings Indy is searching for the Staff of Moses and as usual it’s not an easy trip. Indy seems to take on the entire German army in this adventure as the focus of the game seems to be on combat rather then exploration and traps.
The combat is very intuitive and quite deep – the nunchuck works as your left fist and the wii-mote as your right. Pushing forward does a jab, swinging performs a hook and pushing up does an uppercut. You can also grapple your enemies and drag them over to objects to deliver a little extra punishment. You won’t be able to land a punch on some of the bigger enemies – with these guys you’ll have to press A at the right moment to perform a counter punch.
Indy’s trademark whip can also do a bit of damage – you can wrap the wrist around an enemy’s neck, waist or feet so you can drag them towards you. You can also disarm enemies with the whip and use it to crash furniture onto them. The whip also comes in handy to swing across ledges, break barriers and collect artefacts.
There are some levels on the Wii that would work better on the PS2 and these are the vehicles sections. In one of the earlier levels you are required to fly a plane through a chasm and take down enemy plans using only the Wii-mote – which isn’t the best device to use in this situation. At least on the PS2 you have the dual sticks to keep the plane airborne instead of trying to use motion control while trying to aim at the same time.
The other aspect of the game that is a little disappointing is that a lot of the levels are very linear and only offer one path. Indy is all about exploration and there doesn’t seem to be any of that here which is disappointing.
The Wii version does make up for it a little with some cool unlockables – there is a co-op mode featuring Sean Connery’s Henry Jones Sr and the full version of the PC point-and-click adventure Fate of Atlantis.
Even with its flaws – Staff of Kings is a solid Wii title and a good Indiana Jones adventure that any fan would enjoy.
