X-Men the Official game thoughts

Well the movie is out now and of course – so is the game. Produced by Z-Axis and published by Activision this beat em up title follows the plot line of the films but focuses on three main characters Iceman, Nightcrawler and of course Wolverine.
The main aim of the game is to use the three main characters (with their respective special ‘mutant’ abilities) and almost button bash your way to victory. Iceman has the ability to use his ice creating ability to fire ice blots at enemies and fly or ‘air-surf’ around the map. Nightcrawler has the ability to teleport around the map and Wolverine has none other then his Adamantium claws and rage abilities to dismantle his opponents.
Playing an X-Men title has positive premise since the storylines are quite strong and follow the classic comic series created by Stan Lee. However this title feels like a rush-in to the film in an act to make some quick profit. Level after level of repetitive button mashing with limited (if any) combos might tire and bore the older and more ‘gaming’ experienced audience who look for an entertaining challenge.
Graphic wise, the game comes off with some nice visuals but cut scenes are less to be desired. Z-Axis has opted for still/comic book frame sequences with little or no dialogue. At this time of gaming, we should expect to see some excellent ‘movie like’ FMV sequences at least in such titles where big brand names are used! Square-Enix’s Final Fantasy cut scenes are an excellent example of what games need (a big ask I know!).
This title is available now on the Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, GC, GBA, DS and PC and would best be enjoyed by fans of the series.
