Wii quickly takes over UK

August 31st 2007 06:16

One million Wii’s are currently in UK gamers homes, according to Chart-Track, which Nintendo shows their dominance over the gaming industry once again.

I’m not a Nintendo fan boy, just another observer looking at this as another stat everyone else has been witnessing.

It took 38 weeks for the Wii to sell its first M. In comparison to the PS2 and 360, Nintendo’s white hard drive looking console has pulled such a large audience impressively and quickly.

The PS2 reached its first million in 50 weeks while the 360 took 60 weeks to reach the same.

As impressive as this sound’s, the good news just keeps rolling in for Nintendo, as the DS has an 89% share of the handheld market, destroying any hopes of a PSP takeover in the UK in the next year or so.

David Yarnton, Nintendo’s UK general manager, was happy with this “record breaking achievement” thanks to both systems accessibility to any market of all ages. Most notably, their range of learning-focused DS games for all ages such as Brain Training and Wii Sport, you guessed it, on the Wii.

“The performance of both systems appears to indicate that unprecedented interactive entertainment experiences provided by a combination of the revolutionary nature of DS and Wii with the increasing number of unique software titles for the system from Nintendo and third parties, are being enjoyed by both avid and new gamers of all ages.”

At E3, Nintendo hyped up how good they are, and I’m not bothered by that. They were once overshadowed by the PS2 and Xbox in the last gaming generation. They were once speculated as soon to be part of the SEGA boat from what sales of the Gamecube spoke of. Now they have thrown all their chips into the money-hungry industry hat and came out bigger and successful than ever before.

This will be just another stat to add on their list to gloat over at the next E3, while being business minded, there’s nothing wrong with that.
