Wii to play DVDs...but at a catch...
August 21st 2007 14:09
Currently, the Nintendo Wii does not playback DVDs or any other form of media (don't even THINK about HD-DVD or Bluray for that matter!). Not only that, but Nintendo also announced that a 'newer' Wii will be eventually realised that will have DVD playback enabled. But what about current Wii owners?
A group of hackers have cracked the Wii and released a boot disk that allows Wii owners to run DVDs normally. The only catch however is of course...the Wii must be modified. This of course includes chipping the console thus voiding the Nintendo warranty and also contributing to the growing world of gaming piracy.
So is it worth it? I really don't think so. Stand alone DVD players with lots of functions (output and input ports) are already available at very affordable prices. Let’s not forget about the playback quality from standalone players compared to that of consoles. So if you really really need to watch a DVD on your Wii...better not 'mod' your console and get a boot disk solely for this. It isn’t worth it.
It’s still a pity that Nintendo didn't make the Wii play DVD's straight out of the box though...

Not that I wouldn't be buying games but 'back ups' tend to be cool too sometimes.
