The gaming industry is BOOMING this year! The Wii bringing out the inner geek from every kid and senior gamer, hardcore gamers resting comfortably on their couches playing on Xbox Live, and the rich gamers with their shiny George Foreman.. ahem… PS3’s. It’s great to be a gamer!
Yet for Aussie gamers, we know too well that we are from the arse end of the world and also in the industry (thanks to PAL territory's recieving games at a much later (note: months) date, but like any tax rise, we complain but end up paying the piper anyway, just for that one glimpse of gaming goodness!
Well I’m very enthusiastic right now and you should be too! Covered here is the gaming news highlights since July 26.

- As of July 15, 1 million PS3 consoles has sold in Japan!... Meanwhile 2.9-3.1 million Wii consoles are in Japanese living rooms as well.
Sony America said PS3 sales increased by 135%
- The 360 HD-DVD player had its price slashed in the US.
- Sega announced Darren MacBeth to run a proposed Sega Europe headquarters in Australia. No information released about where in Oz.
--- Happy Birthday! Metal Gear Solid has been loved by the video game industry for 20 years.
--- Happy Birthday! To another games series turning/ed 20: Final Fantasy!
So far, Activision is beating EA in US sales by US$32.1 million to become the current No.1 third party games developer.
- The annual X games event, started back in 2001, has been cancelled this year! Also the Games Developers Conference in Korea has been cancelled so far, but the main site suggests it might take place later in the year.
A UK event, replacing the X games, is scheduled to take place just before Christmas
- Wondering how much progress Square-Enix has made in creating Final Fantasy 13? It’s only 13 per cent complete. So fat chance for a 2007 release.
- THQ makes friends with Steam and has released Full Spectrum Warrior and Company of Heroes as downloads. Coming soon; Supreme Commander and S.T.A.L.K.E.R!
- According to Blizzard, nine million users had subscribed to World of Warcraft!
- While Japan’s slim PSP’s are releasing in all the colours on the rainbow, aussie PSP slims, yet to be released, will be coming only in black and white colours
Releases Announced
-- Upcoming James Cameron movie ‘Avatar’ and TV show ‘Heroes’ are being created by Ubisoft.
- Konami has announced Metal Gear Online is in production for the PS3!
- The Wii initiative starts to gain steam to pull 3rd party developers with Rockstar Leed’s porting the 360’s Table Tennis to Wii
- EA said November 15 is the date of third person co-op focused game, Army of Two’s, debut on retailer shelves.
- Far Cry 2 announced
- PS2’s Rockstar game, Bully, will be released on the 360 and Wii as ‘Bully: Scholarship Edition’.
- First person semi-RPG game, Stalker, is receiving a prequel in the form of Stalker: Clear Sky. As the title suggests, the game is set before the environment went to hell as The Zone.
