Want to be a chief? Try Cooking Mama on the DS

The Japs think of everything these days and Cooking Mama on the Nintendo DS is a perfect example of Japanese quirky games at their best. Taito Corp recently released this title in Japan, and is scheduled to release the English version next month. From what I can see, this title is full of mini-games that really take advantage of the microphone and touch screen featured in the DS.
Players will be given a range of options including the creation or mixing of ingredients and meals which are rated by Mama. That’s the basic premise, with players being able to flip food in a frypan, cutting up bread and parsley and blowing on the food (through the mic!) in timed coordination with a moving bar (like Dance Dance Revolution). That’s just a few of the wide variety of abilities the player can perform in the game. Additionally, multiplayer modes will also be available through the Wi-fi function of the DS, with players competing against each other to produce the best dish!
I am really interested in this title and it will be released at a cheaper price than an ordinary DS game. This lets me question…will the game get ‘old’ pretty quick after playing it over time. When I think of games with the stylus I always feel that such games will get tiring and boring. On the other hand, this game makes use of the stylus and mic in many ways so it might not be that bad after all. Another downside I see to this title is the fact that most of the dishes players will make will be themed under Japanese cuisine. There is nothing really wrong with that…but I am pretty sure gamers would love to twirl a pizza in the air or flip a burger as well!
