Virtua Tennis 3 and the Sixaxis control serving an ace on the PS3

I wrote up a blog on Virtua Tennis 3 ages ago, and finally next month we will see this highly anticipated tennis title heading to the PS3 (along with the Xbox 360, PC and PSP). Note I did not mention Nintendo’s Wii, but days are still early. On the point of the Wii, the PS3 version of the game will make use of Sixaxis controls which significantly add a new dimension to the game.
The Sixaxis controls essentially let the player add a greater lob or slice to the ball during play. For example, the player can achieve this by moving the controller up for a higher lob or lower for a greater slice. The PS3 controller is wireless, and this is a step up for Sony in comparison to Nintendo Wii’s complete motion sensored gameplay which has taken the gaming world by storm. Let’s just hope that the Sixaxis isn’t poorly designed and infact is very responsive to the player’s controller movements.
Well on the gaming side of things, the graphics are very very nice. Player models look extremely accurate and resemble their real-life counterparts to the very tip of their noses and strings of their hairs! Stadiums also look quite exquisite along with the crowd which moves and cheers like a real crowd should (not like cardboard models we are so used to in tennis games).
All the play modes you expect in a tennis title are present including single and double tournaments, along with a whole range of real-life women and men tennis players. World Tour mode returns where players can create their own personalized character and increase their stat points passed on a variety of fun minigames. I particularly loved these minigames and this time around players must also take in game holidays, rest days or power drinks to recover from tournaments. This is a nice little addition to the game which helps the player manage their character a tad bit better.
Highly recommended and out next month, I will surely purchase this title when I get my PS3 (eventually when they release it here in Australia next month!).
