The Ship: a murder mystery with a bite

Using the CS Source engine, publisher Mindscape is set to release an innovative and addictive title on the PC by the name of The Ship. This is no ordinary game with prime gameplay set online between players on a ship (as suggested by the title) where players are assigned a person whom they must kill whilst trying to avoid being killed by another person who has them on their hit list. The ship is set in the classic 1920’s design where there are narrow walkways and nicely decorated sleeping rooms (reminds my of the Orient Express atmosphere).
So players must kill other players…so what? Well they cannot kill anyone they see but only a specific person who must be identified in a mix of other online players who are seeking the same aim. This is where the fun in the title blossoms. Whilst the game is set in first person, players must also change clothing, go to the toilet, eat and sleep in order to maintain physical and mental health within the game. At any time where one of these actions are being performed, the player might get killed from behind (being alert in this game is a must).
Weapons in this game are not your ordinary guns but more so umbrellas (using the pointy tip) and pool cues for example. Understandably, in an online atmosphere there will be idiots who try to kill anyone and anything that moves on the ship which will basically ruin the game for people who attempt to play it seriously. This is annoying; however there is a penalty system in place causing perpetrators to be taken out of the game for a certain time limit before rejoining. This is an unavoidable situation that does occur with online games, but let’s hope the punishment is decent enough to deter such players from wrecking the game for others.
This title is priced quite cheaply and has a very interesting premise which I would recommend to players who enjoy FPS titles with an added ‘Sims’ flavour.
