The Lord of the Rings Online!

Blizzard’s highly successful World of Warcraft has a new challenger in the MMORPG world, The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar.
For those who have been hiding under a rock for the past few years or new to the online gaming scene, MMORPGS (otherwise known as massively multiplayer online role playing games –phew) have taken the gaming world by storm lately (and the money out of our wallets) leaving many players addicted and losing their position in RL (real life
With an ambition to jump on the MMORPG bandwagon and cease a slice of profit away from Blizzard, creator Turbine Inc, along with distributor Codemasters has taken the famous franchise of J.R.R Tolkien’s fantasy universe and placed it into an online game for fans and gamers alike to fulfil their dream (or fantasy take it as you wish) to be part of Frodo’s fellowship.
Players will be able to choose a character from 1 of 4 races; hobbits, humans, elves and dwarfs, and complete quests/instances in teams (or individually) to gather items rare and common in a massive world. There will be up to 50 character levels, with character transformations according to deeds and quests done in the game.
By now you may be asking, what about the orcs and Sauron’s other little minions? Will they also be playable and thus create a PvP world (player vs. player) similar to that of the Horde vs. Alliance in WoW? From what I can see (and read), it looks like there will be no PvP at launch. This may account to the fact that the creators wanted to follow the plot of good destroying evil, evil being the orcs and their allies.
From my viewpoint, this is a big problem since many players play (and pay monthly fees – something which will also be applied to this game!) to verse other people in an online world. I love the thrill of actually playing against another person – creating a competitive and exciting environment. Don’t get me wrong, playing with a large team and coordinating tactics is also downright fun, but I would still love to verse my friends online. I just hope this might be rectified sooner than later – perhaps an expansion pack in the future?
Finally, this is no rush job of a game – with 4 years in the making and currently near completion. LOTRO is expected to be officially released on the PC by November 2006, with an Xbox360 title being rumoured.
