The Games of Gamma 256
December 17th 2007 01:40
Certainly, gaming has become big business these days, with the release of the consoles, which have all met with generally favourable reviews. The massive games for the XBox, the casual party-antics of the Wii, and the hopeful predictions for the potential of the PS3.
I don't have a console, and my computer can't really play games any more. What am I to do?
Luckily, I've got a soft-spot for indie games, and Gamma 256 describes what I love about indie game design. The games all run on Windows XP and use 256 colours... with such low-tech requirements, the games are trying to be original and unique.
TIGSource has a sweet list of 10 fantastic games from the 'game jam', and it makes me want to squander the entire afternoon.
How about mowing down zombies?
How about a game inspired by Le Petit Prince?
Gamma 256 shows that there's an entire community out there committed to creativity in the gaming market. While none of these games are going to make a lot of money, they're all symbols of the abilities of individuals. One person making a game? Why not?
