The Force Unleashed gets disappointing reviews
September 24th 2008 01:53
Sigh... I've written previous posts on The Force Unleashed, the latest Star Wars-themed game from LucasArts, a game that allows the player to step into the shoes of a powerful apprectice of Darth Vader, wreaking havoc in the Star Wars universe.
Well, I'm not going to dive all the way in, but preliminary reviews of the game are not favourable at all, and I don't think it's because of hype backlash, as in the case of Spore.
ArsTechnica expresses a sad note of disappointment:
"...but the final version is buggy, messy, and stretches the patience of even the most hardcore Star Wars fan... The problem is that the game never feels solid, or even finished."
Sad. Sad. Sad.
This is a game that really lit up eyes... the development team created physics and AI engines to create a world that you could really affect with your Force Powers. Look at this demo:
That looks.... mindblowing...
In the race to get the game out in time, though, the studio has released a buggy product with slow load times and gameplay that turns the game into repetition. They seemed to have put so much work into how the game behaves that they spent pocket change on the actual gameplay.
Sadly, this will disappoint Star Wars fans across the board.
A ludicrous suggestion: they should turn the game into an editor, allowing fans to create their own stories and games with the engine, allowing the best mods to rise up to the top. Take advantage of your fans, LucasArts, they love the Star Wars canon more than you do.
