Tekken on the Sony PSP!

April 18th 2006 08:02

It is confirmed, the remarkable fighting series produced by Namco is on its way to the Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) as Tekken: Dark Resurrection.

To those who are unfamiliar with the Tekken game series, Tekken involves a large variety of fighters who battle against one another to win the crown as the best fighter in the King of the Iron Fist Tournament.

"Does this mask look cute?"

The game's characters all have inter-linking plot lines which generally hold a storyline throughout the series and keep the gamers coming back for more. Players choose a character and are pit in battles with opponents set in both closed and free roaming arenas. The main aim is pommelling your opponent with relentless combos (or button 'bashing') until they are defeated.

An interesting aspect about this PSP release is how close the graphics and game play resemble that of the arcade and Playstation 2 release of the game. The PSP controls itself are almost identical to the PS2 controller, so ease of pulling off combos and spectacular moves will not be a problem. My only concern is the speed of the game play and graphics that will follow from this newly created game for the PSP (or moreover, a 're-make' of Tekken 5 with a few additional features).

On the bright side, the game will include 2 new characters Dragunov and Lili to the line up listed in Tekken 5, a variety of mini games and Ad-Hoc multiplayer battles, allowing players to challenge each other using Wi-Fi!

The Wi-Fi feature is quite interesting since it will still allow players to challenge other players and not only the computer AI. This is most essential in fighting games otherwise in my opinion; fighting games on the handheld console would loose their ‘competitive’ meaning very quickly.

Now that must hurt!

Another high quality fighting game to watch out for on the PSP is Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max which also has an Ad-Hoc multiplayer mode.

Games are being released quicker and quicker with Tekken: Dark Resurrection having a planned release date of Mid-2006.

Another PS classic to make the switch to portable!

Any news on whether the Resident Evil series would make the switch too?

Yep its great to see an excellent series go portable.
Regarding Capcom's Resident Evil series going portable, the Nintendo DS already has a portable title named Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, which is essentially a remake of the orignal game in the series.

For the PSP, the future looks bleak, since there have only been rumours of Resident Evil: Outbreak port coming onto the PSP and nothing confirmed as yet.

I guess we will have to grit our teeth and wait!
