Table Tennis on the Xbox 360!
May 28th 2006 04:59
The other day I strolled into my local Wizards video games store and was captured by the new ping-pong game (table tennis to be more formal) which was running on the Xbox 360. Fluid animation and quick gameplay really stood out as I saw a man in his mid forties bash away at the buttons and really get into the game (perhaps reminiscing to the classic Pong game
Rockstar games, the makers of the famous Grand Theft Auto series are behind the creation of this sporting title and have done a great job at it (away from the violent games they have been producing in the past). This game, as you expect, allows players to choose a table tennis character and pit them in a one on one match against either the computer or their friend. Xbox 360 Live! also allows players to compete against online players across the world, which certainly adds longevity of the game.
Control-wise, the game utilises the analog buttons on the Xbox joystick nicely with players being able to pull off slices, top spin shots, hooks, and even back spins. Combinations of shots can also be played enabling players to put a side spin/topspin on the ball for example at the same time! The rumble feature in the controller is also used well, with players being warned with a vibration that their shot is reaching a high amount of power which may result in the ball being hit out.
One disappointing aspect of the title is no career mode, create a character or doubles matches which are present in many tennis games. Maybe these features will be included in a sequel to this title, since Rockstar has focused highly on the single player gameplay which has been executed at a high standard.
This is a very quick and addictive game with the stunning graphics of the Xbox 360 accompanied by the intuitive controls and is out now only on the Xbox 360.

If this is anything to go by, I'm looking forward to seeing other sports games such as tennis and soccer on the next generation consoles!
