Street Fighter Hyper Fighting online is a hit!

August 17th 2006 11:25

Street Fighter II, the classic one on one fighting game released on arcade in 1991 has been re-released on the Xbox 360, and this time with a greater emphasis on online play. For those who are diehard Street Fighter fans, this edition of SF Hyper was actually released on the Sega Dreamcast some years ago (in the dieing days of the poor console) and it featured online mode! Yep, players could pit it out online many years ago…but not that many people did.

I guess the popularity (and addictive gameplay) of this title is a reason why Capcom is allowing gamers to download and play in a ranked system online through Xbox 360’s online service. It is quite cheap at US$10 and can be rewarding to fans of fighting games (especially in the classic 2D genre). Although players can achive ranks on a global chart, unranked games also exist for those who just want to play around for fun and not get stressed by the competitiveness of ranked games.

There are a few problems with this release and they tend to relate to the Xbox 360 controller and actually setting up an online match which has been structured in a really annoying manner. Control-wise, players will find it difficult at first to perform all their special moves with quick precisions (including uppercuts and charges) due to weakly structured analog sticks on the controller. Any SF fan will know that this is a common problem with many consoles when trying to play a SF (or similar fighting game) with my personal experience with SF Alpha 3 on the PSP…very annoying to pull of the right moves at times. Also, setting up an online game may take longer than actually playing in the game. Players are not given the option to retry a match and must exit and reset the match from the menu. This is not really game-player friendly and will irritate gamers who are eager to rechallenge their opponent immediately.

Well I still play SF 2 Hyper and the loads of other SF games on my DC, Xbox, and PSP with matches getting really ‘hyper’ and blood boiling. Capcom have really created a gem of a game and it is still wonderful to see it alive 15 years later on the latest console. Keep bringing the Street Fighters please!
