STOP PRESS…downgrader for PSP 2.5/2.6!!

July 5th 2006 07:25

Yes that’s correct, over the past few days PSP owners have being going crazy…either from successfully downgrading their PSPs or just bricking them. I myself have successfully downgraded my version 2.6 to 1.5 and its damn fine!

If you don’t understand how big this development is…let me give you a brief run down on why it is so major. Firmware 1.5 typically allows gamers to use full homebrew support and play backups of ISOs (which is illegal mind you). Over successive releases of the PSP, Sony has released firmware updates and patches which render such exploits in the firmware so that no homebrew software can be run anymore. This included firmware versions 2.01 and greater. A few months ago, 2 programmers Fanjta and Ditlew released a loader program which worked in conjunction with GTA: Liberty City Stories, which allowed gamers with firmware 2.01 to 2.6 to enjoy homebrew support (not ISOs loading). This was a major development and became the initial steps to the working downgrader which exists now.

Along came Dark AleX, Mathieulh and Yoshihiro with their release of the downgrader which utilises the eloader and other exploits (including kernel access) and allows firmware 2.5/2.6 to be downgraded to 1.5 (an amazing development which is another blow to Sony). This was released a few days ago and many people were sceptical since some people’s PSPs became ‘bricked’. It turns out that not all PSPs can run the downgrader software which includes PSPs that are factory set to 2.5 or 2.6 or are a TA-082 version. PSPs however which were upgraded to 2.5/2.6 from 2.01 for example can be downgraded successfully at this moment (and I have done so using a 2.01 to 2.6 to 1.5).

Sony ought to be very angry with this development, additionally to the new mod-chip which has also been released for the PSP, the Undiluted Platinum. This of course is more risky since you must open up the PSP (voiding your warranty) and solder on the chip to the PSP’s motherboard). Another step being made to combat this problem of downgrading has been shown also from the new releases of GTA: Liberty City Stories on the PSP which have the exploit found by Fanjta patched so the eloader cannot be used anymore. This will obviously limit the amount of people being able to use the eloader to downgrade their PSPs (and increase the price and rarity of the original Liberty City stores which has not been patched).

Well I am off to play my PSP….patience has paid off after all! Keep on gaming!
If you are going to downgrade your PSP I suggest you do so at YOU OWN RISK! As I stated above, people have ‘bricked’ their PSPs trying this, and you should read all documentation surrounding this downgrader and what PSPs are compatible. Replacing 400 bucks isn’t cheap :/

Those guys suck, they make it complicating to downgrade. I mean these are suppose to be hackers, if they were such good hackers they could make a download file onto your psp and it downgrades by just clicking on it. Stupid hackers, what use are they if they hack it and we can still brick our psps. Fucking morons.

First of all, the main concept of downgrading the PSP's firmware is a major problem for Sony as it poses the main threat of users playing illegal isos and modifying the firmware for their own usage (and has been down now following a further downgrade to 1.0 and upgrade to modified firmware). This is the main reason Sony is making it harder and harder for hackers to find exploits.

Secondly, to actually find an exploit in the code/firmware has taken a loooong time ...it was said that it would NNEVER HAPPEN. Be grateful for what these guys have done. If you don't want to brick your PSP, go purchase a PSP that already has been downgraded...or take the risk.

Thirdly, you are going off at these guys who do this at no profit. It takes a large effort to do this for free and especially with the amount of PSP's they have already bricked themselves to try to get to this stage. If you can make an easier way to downgrade the PSP then show us...otherwise STFU.
