Stone Cold Update: No PS3 price cut for Europe but temporary for US
July 14th 2007 10:10
No price cut for European gamers, unfortunately; instead we are treated to a bundle pack with the PS3 console, two controllers and two games, reportedly Sandstorm and Resistance for the UK, and most probably costing the original price of $999.
As for the price cut for American PS3’s? According to gamesindustry.biz interview with SCEE President David Reeves, it’s only for the 60gb model that will soon be phased out, like the PS3 controller with rumbleless feature, as the new 80gb model will become the standard model to buy.
This has also been backed up by a Sony spokesperson confirming this revelation to gamasutra:
“The US are currently transitioning from the 60GB to the 80GB mode of the PlayStation 3. When stock of the 60GB model runs out it will no longer be available in the U.S.”
Sony has called the bluff and now shows their hand, we happen to get a free controller and two games out of this, but the whole ‘price drop’ announcements from Sony this week feels like my emotion's been toyed upon and makes me feel less inclined to eventually buy one.
Since the 60gb will soon stop producing, I wonder how PS3 owners feel after paying all AUS$999 solely on the console and one controller? Or even how 360 owners feel after hearing about the new Elite console soon to be released. Well I felt sorry for my parents after they first bought me the first model of the PS2 at full price, later realising it won’t run future PS2 titles. It goes-to-show the risks of buying consoles at their launch date.

it isn't so much a price slash but rather a fire sale?
