Splosion Man

I don’t buy a lot of games of Xbox Live Arcade but the Winter of Arcade (Summer of Arcade to you American folks) has delivered some quality titles. Before everyone jumps on my back – I’ve only ever purchased Braid off XBLA but I’m aware there are some decent titles on there like Geometry Wars, Uno, Pac-Man, Castle Crashers etc but I’ve just not been interested in any of those titles.
This winter there has been some great titles – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, Secret of Monkey Island Special Editions and Splosion Man. Plus we’ve just got Shadow Complex – although I haven’t bought this yet.
So Splosion Man is a fantastic 2D platformer. You are made of explosions and your goal in this game is to get from Point A to Point B whilst getting revenge on the scientists that turned you into the freak that you are. It looks like a Sonic the Hedgehog game except you’re not collecting anything and you’re not travelling super fast.
Anyone can play this game because there are essentially only two controls – the right analogue stick to move and any of the face buttons to explode. Exploding shoots you into the air and hitting again will send you a little higher and a third time will make you get even more air. This is how you will navigate through the game – you can explode from wall to wall Prince of Persia-style and use explosive barrels for a boost and to be shot to a new area.
That’s pretty much it – it’s very simple and very fun. There are 50 levels for the single player and another 50 for co-op with up to four players.
The best thing about XBLA is that there is a demo for every game – download the demo for sure and then decide if you think it’s worth the 800 MS Points. I think it’s a steal and definitely highly recommended from me.
