Sony releases v 2.7 firmware! No Homebrew?
May 1st 2006 02:59
Sony has recently released the new firmware update for the PSP console – version 2.7. This has brought a lot of mixed reactions from gamers within the PSP scene, with the addition of a few beneficial features, but more importantly the blocking of homebrew software once again.
Firstly the main benefits of the 2.7 firmware upgrade:
-Macromedia flash is now supported by the internet browser.
-AAC music format is now playable.
Secondly, the disadvantage for current homebrew gamers:
-Complete patch up of the GTA exploit disabling homebrew support.
For those who are not familiar to the homebrew scene, the GTA exploit utilises Fanjita’s eLoader which enables gamers to play emulators and other homebrew software which are not created by Sony. This includes running Super Nintendo and Sega Mega Drive roms which has become quite popular for playing classic titles such as Super Mario All-stars and Sonic the Hedgehog!
Sony seems set to keep players focused on Sony PSP titles only, with the continual addition of mini PSP features such as web browsers and extra music support to sway gamers into upgrading firmware. Another step I would think is the release of TV streaming through the PSP – one future update Sony might release (and possibly accompany another patch if any other exploits are found).
An interesting insight into all the commotion caused in the homebrew scene is Fanjita’s reaction to the new update. Simply said – if you want to continue playing homebrew, then don’t upgrade your firmware.
Funny enough, the demo of an upcoming PSP hit titled LocoRoco has been encrypted and signed EBOOT. This interestingly is the same name of the EBOOT loader created by Fanjita – perhaps a little taunt towards Fanjita from Sony in my view.
In response to Sony’s firmware update (and elimination of the GTA exploit), Fanjita has announced work on an ISO loader as “revenge”. Initially Fanjita was entirely against such a loader as it promoted piracy – however Sony’s attempt at closing the homebrew scene has set Fanjita and accompanying crackers into a new direction.
It will be interesting to see how the PSP homebrew and firmware update scene develops over the next few months (and years), so you must ask yourself -is it really worth upgrading? You decide.

Homebrew can run on PSPs up to 2.6 - NOT 2.7.
If you do end up going to the shop and wish to purchase a PSP, simply look at the back of the box where the barcoding is and under the voltage rating (240v for Australia) is a small letter. It corresponds to the firmware version you have.
A = 1.5 (Firmware version)
B = 1.51
C = 1.52
D = 1.52
E = 1.52
F = 2.0
G = 2.01
H = 2.50
I = 2.60
