Sega unleashes an online mech-fighter on the Xbox 360

July 18th 2006 07:49

Futuristic war games have become quite popular in the gaming industry over the years, and the use of massive movable robots with legs that fire rockets (ahem the stereotypical view of this genre) still captures gamers ever year. This time around, Sega has released Chromehounds for the Xbox 360 which results in some addictive and fun online gameplay.

If you are looking for a single player experience, you might be disappointed with this title since the single player module in the game merely serves to introduce and train the player for the main aspect of the game: the multiplayer world. Having said that, this game is only rewarding to those who seek to put in the hours and play online to build their character and learn the team work which makes this game so addictive.

Basically, the player is given a choice from a range of vehicles which look like mechanical spiders and can holster a range of weaponry of the player’s choice. Weaponry includes your typical rocket launchers and rifles to name a few (plasmas and lasers are not really part of the weaponary in this title) and players will chose from 1 of 3 world teams that are engaged in conflict; the United States, Russia or the Middle East. As the player progresses in the game, they will be able to add more weaponary and upgrade their vehicle accordingly (as you would expect) and hence become stronger and thus win. The game however strives to focus on teamwork, with communication between team members for example, only limited to specific areas on the map (communication towers).

I like the look of this game and it shows the graphically beauty of the Xbox 360 in an all action environment. Online games are becoming the norm these days, and this game focuses almost entirely on that. I would thus recommend this title to players who which to play a competitive online game which doesn’t involved running around with a pistol, but with quicker gameplay, greater teamwork and rewarding gameplay in the long run.
