Rome: Total War is giving me a headache
December 4th 2008 06:32
I posted a few videos of the upcoming Empire: Total War PC game, but all they did was remind me how much I loved Rome: Total War, and that I really wanted to play it again.
So, I found it in a bargain bin for $20, bought it on the spot and installed it on my feeble laptop - I love picking up bargain bin games because, though they were great games, their age means that they'll run great on average computers now.
And it's gold! Rome:Total War is one of the most loved strategy war games out there, allowing the player to control one of the Roman families before the rise of the Roman empire. Of course, you want to be Caesar, ruling with a proud statement of "Veni, Vidi, Vici".
Unfortunately, I'm a long way from there - starting with the Julii family in northern Italy, I'm facing non-stop threats from a devlish Gaul. These barbarians are driving me crazy!
Not only that, but your family is of utmost importance in Rome... your sons and grandsons will form the generals of your army, and their noble presence can mean the difference between victory and defeat.
Sadly, my leader's children had only a few children, and one of those grandkids has already been declared 'flaccid', which means he probably won't have kids. It's a grim future, one where my armies will have to defend cities without leaders. I know I'll have to restart, I know it.
This review reminds us of the fantastic detail that allow different factions to play uniquely:
"For instance, one may wonder, what is the difference between Roman cavalry and Egyptian cavalry? Egyptian cavalry ride camels, which the Roman horses can be frightened by. "
Eurogamer review of the game:
"In a real way, Rome: Total War is the absolute exemplar of PC gaming. It's about what only PCs can really do: that is, everything, and everything at once. In an age of comfortable genre-games, the Total War series have always stood slightly aside from the main thrust of culture. Anything cerebral and PC-centred, they take from, with even trace elements of RPGs showing up."

The action is with limited numbers of units, so you have plenty of control & really feel it when someone/thing gets hit. Since coming out a couple of years ago, it has won multiple awards & it sets the standard for patches & user support.
The online player community is large, active & more civil than many. I can't recommend it too highly, but be prepared to lose many, many hours of your life to it! Best regards, P.
