Reflections on Grim Fandango
August 4th 2008 07:47
Not me - I'm not reflecting on Grim Fandango, though I'd love to.
The LucasArts adventure game is one of my all-time favourites... a resoundingly satisfying adventure game, with wonderful voice acting and beautiful Aztec-influenced backgrounds.
Cruise Elroy had a retro-gaming session with Grim and posted his impressions.
Interestingly, he found several of the puzzles illogical... I can relate, since I struggled with some of the strange puzzles at the beginning of the game.
Sorry, that quote was from Brainy Gamer.
Grim Fandango really makes us wonder why we like it. Someone pointed out: we lavish praise on the voice acting, but are our standards so low for videogames?
Yes, yes they are.
Play Grim Fandango again - and let's have a good time!

"I thought the second puzzle was great, but the work order puzzle relied on what I think of as an illegitimate approach. The game world didn’t really provide any knowledge (although I may have missed something) that would enable you to solve the work order unless you act in a way that contradicts the character’s motives. Manny is desperate to get the order signed; unless he already knows what’s going on with Don it’s not reasonable for him to go outside. For the player, who knows that there must be some solution to this problem, leaving the building is reasonable, but forcing the player to use that knowledge breaks the immersion."
