Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

The latest installment of one of my favourite games, the award-winning Pro Evolution Soccer Series, is due out for release in Australia at the end of October.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 aka PES 2009 is set to feature a raft of improvements on its predecessor with a graphical update of players, better depictions of weather conditions unique to each stadium, more animations, more distinctive moves and the introduction of LED adboards.

Check out the following clip showing Cristiano Ronaldo take a free-kick exactly like he would in real life - from the open-legged stance to the actual shot-making.

The gameplay of this uber popular game obviously needs no introduction but the artificial intelligence in PES 2009 has been further improved to bridge the gap between PES gaming and the real thing. The players are cleverer than ever before i.e. more adaptable to tactics, better off-the-ball movement such as running to receive passes, better timed tackles and more fluidity in movements.

A new addition to PES 2009 is the readjustments for ball movements and air resistance calculations for the trajectory of the ball. This means that the heaviness of the pitch will visibly impact the overall gameplay - ball movement will be affected by a water-logged pitch, backspin routines are calculated so that ball slows accordingly, and players are now able to make more effective use of the bounce of the ball. This means players can now flick the ball up for a volley, or to lift it over a defender’s trailing leg.

The star on the cover of PES 2009 is Barcelona and Argentina superstar Lionel Messi but the official images have yet to be released.

All these changes, major or minor, combine to make PES 2009 as life-like as possible and there's no doubt endless hours will be spent mastering these innovative new control elements and key online elements by fans of this genre.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 will be available on PS3, PSP, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii from October 30.
