Lumines oh Lumines! When I first put my gaming hands on the original title on the PSP I was HOOKED (and still am)! If you have ever played the classic game Tetris, than you will feel right at home with this cool little title! Players essentially stack blocks which are formed of 4 blocks (into 1 main block and can be rotated) and need to create a combination of lines and rectangles to clear the screen and progress levels.

Sounds like a standard puzzle game eh? The nifty features which make this title great also include the excellent soundtrack and sound coordination of button pressing and line clearing which really moves the gamer into the soundtrack and flow of the game. This time around, Q Entertainment has opted for a more western-type soundtrack with the likes of Fatboy slim, Missy Elliott and Gwen Stefani. Its good to see more mainstream music in the game but I hope the originality of Japanese artists which made the first game so good are not left out in this title.

The game also has over 60 new skins and the ability to customize the layout of the screen. Moreover, it plays very much like its original but with a larger variety of music and video backgrounds which may confuse some gamers during puzzle play and be off putting (or make the game more exciting ). Multiplayer modes are still there, along with AI competition modes which can also allow gamers to unlock additional music tracks and skins.

Lumines has really taken off since it became a smash hit on the PSP, with titles on the PS2 (Lumines Plus) and Xbox 360 (Lumines Live!). This just goes to show that games like this puzzler don’t necessarily need to create awe in the gamer, but just present mind challenging puzzles and sweet music to entertain the gamer! This is a highly recommended title!

Glorious fighter jet play: Ace Combat X

November 6th 2006 00:34

Namco’s Ace Combat series has been running for quite some time now, and has never let down fans of the series or jet fighter games. Being so successful, Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception, is now available for the PSP and it looks quite nice in handheld format. Those familiar with the series will know that Ace Combat allows players to use a large range of real fighter jets with a multitude of realistic weaponry and HUD layout to take on enemies in mission based combat.

I recently played and finished Scarface: Money Power Respect on the PSP and although I am an avid Scarface fan, I was quite disappointed with this title. Vivendi Games has essentially put together a mini-strategy game based loosely on the film where gamers take control of a block of land on the map and ‘build’ drug factories, hire thugs and dealers to generate income to eventually control the whole city. Players are rewarded with clips from the film as they progress through the game which is very simple and can be finished in a matter of hours.

PaRappa rappin onto the PSP

September 22nd 2006 08:28

It has been 10 years since the original PaRappa the Rapper appeared on the PSX, and fans who loved the original (and new gamers alike) will be in for a treat when this re-release lands on the PSP by the end of this year (or early next). This is a bizarre game but an enjoyable one to say the least. I set my gaming mitts on this title shortly after it was released on the PSX and it does bring back fond memories…kick chop!

Capcom is following the ‘re-release’ band wagon with Powerstone Compilation coming out next month for the PSP. This nice little compilation is formed of Powerstone 1 and 2 which were released on the Sega Dreamcast around 6 years ago (yes it has been 6 years…wow!).

Capcom brings back the classics

September 12th 2006 15:48

I love when big gaming companies re-release classic titles which I used to play when I was a kid. Boy I miss those Mega Drive and Super Nintendo days. I bet a lot of older gamers out there feel the same way when they see that the simplistic and addictiveness of such old games cannot be beaten by the latest high tech games available these days. Capcom has realised this gaming market and are set to release Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded on the PSP which is comprised of a nice bundle of Capcom goodies for gamers to poke their gaming minds at.

Earthworm Jim returns!

August 31st 2006 12:22

Sweet as it sounds, Shiny is bringing Earthworm Jim to the Sony PSP and boy does it bring back memories. If you are too young to know of this title or just didn’t play the game at all in the past, Earthworm Jim is an earthworm with legs and arms and in a space suit. To boot, Jim also carries a light gun and can inflict a load of damage on all those who get in his path!

Ghosts ‘n Goblins reborn!

July 25th 2006 15:05

Who would of believed that Capcom would bring this title back to life in classic 2D format for the PSP. Yes that’s correct, if you are old enough to remember (I know I am) Ghosts ‘n Goblins was a smash hit when it was released in 1985 as an arcade title and on the NES. The title resurfaced onto the Gameboy in the year 2000, followed by a PS2 title in Maximo: Ghosts to Glory which followed a similar flow to the classic title but in 3D.

W T F on the PSP!

July 20th 2006 15:44

Work Time Fun – catchy title for this nifty little PSP game full of mini games to keep you company while on the run. This title is comprised of a collection of mini-games which essentially waste your time. Players are given a range of jobs in which they must solve puzzles, press certain button combinations or count images within certain time frames and at certain speeds. As the difficulty increases, so does the speed and the amount of items the player must retrieve or kill.

Yes that’s correct, over the past few days PSP owners have being going crazy…either from successfully downgrading their PSPs or just bricking them. I myself have successfully downgraded my version 2.6 to 1.5 and its damn fine!
