Sony to release a revamped PSP!

July 15th 2007 04:38

New PSP on the left

In time for Christmas this year, Sony will release the redesigned and slightly upgraded edition of their handheld console the Playstation Portable. So is this news that 'big'' and it will it make countless PSP owners out there sell their current PSPs and purchase the new edition (*ahem* Nintendo and the DS (to Lite version)? My prediction is pretty much no...

Sony has done a few changes which include double onboard memory to 64mb, a slimmer and less heavier feel to the console, and a TV out function which will allow users to output their display on to their TV screen if they wish to. Seems to me that Sony has followed Nintendo a bit late on this one, with Nintendo's DS Lite being a smash hit in comparison to its original, heavier and less brighter design.
Watching UMDs on the TV

The new design will surely lure gamers who have always been eager to purchase a PSP, but its not such a big thing to be worked up over. The screen remains the same with a slight increase in performance speed with new 'data loading' abilities regarding the UMD and onboard memory. If Sony really wants this revamp to be a smash hit - they really need to look at the price and market it well enough to compete against Nintendo's DS Lite. The 'new' Sony PSP is set to retail at $169USD for the Core edtion and $199USD for the Entertainment pack which contains a few UMD films and 1GB memory stick.

If you have been waiting to buy a PSP and watching UMD movies or playing PSP games outputted onto your home TV (and you can live with the slightly heavier build of the current PSP), I suggest you grab a bargain on eBay or store clearances when the current model is being phased out.

hmmm i am a psp owner and i don't see what the big deal is? i actually think the psp is a kick ass machine but some of the games have been dire. as the ds has shown if you have quality games, the people will buy.

i also think the psp has had a raw deal too though.

Likewise - I reckon the PSP is an awesome piece of kit. I quite like the feel and weight of my PSP so I won't be in a rush to trade in for a PSP2.

You do homebrew Stanley?

i am quite happy with my psp... i dont 'shove' it my pocket as I tend to pack it away in my bag when I am not using it.. so size isnt a big deal (hence I adore the massive size of the screen!).

My only quirk so far with the psp is the analog controller which doesnt fend so well when playing steet fighter alpha 3 and tekken 5 :/
