PS3 games to cost AU$120?!
September 27th 2006 09:15
Sony has just set the price for seven of the launch titles for its PS3 console and the prices do look dear. Gamers will expect to pay US$59.99 for each PS3 title, which amounts to US$10 more than the Xbox360 and Wii game prices. These launch titles include Call of Duty 3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Sonic the Hedgehog to name a few.
Converting US$59.99 to Australian dollars, we see that the price isn’t AU$120 but more like AU$80. Now that would be quite cheap mind you for a PS3 game but I think Sony will follow the same cost structure that Microsoft has in place for its current Xbox360 games which can sell up to AU$120. The positive side that I have seen by Microsoft, is the depreciation in selling price for some of its Xbox360 games which I have seen as low as AU$70. Sony will eventually follow this structure as we have seen in the history of games sales (e.g Platinum hits).
Now while I ramble on about the price of PS3 games, I also question the fact to whether gamers will be able to import PS3 games from overseas (e.g Australians importing American games) and if PS3 will allow multi-region compatibility. If the PS3 does allow this feature, than some eager gamers will be able to grab a ‘bit’ of a bargain (in the case they can escape taxes) and purchase a PS3 game which comes in NTSC format for a cheaper price. Otherwise gamers will have to wait patiently for the game to drop in price or hit ‘Platinum’ status for example.
At the end of the day, gamers in Australia will have to wait till March (boo Sony) and expect to pay up to AU$1000 for a PS3, let alone counting the cost of an additional joystick and games. It begs me to question, was video gaming originally intended to focus on children (who seriously can not afford such crazy prices) or the adults who used to be children…

They did slash the price up in japan, maybe it will be better for us to import..

On the price slash, I doubt Australia will follow suit. The Japanese market is more demanding and larger than Australia's and Sony will have to serioulsly compete against Nintendo's Wii which will prove a huge competitor at such a low price.

Because it wont be region encoded I'm quite sure multiregion games from all its back catalogue will be region free, no sense encoding its emulated software you know?
You should also know that the price of the games might be higher than expected for now, I don't think they'll stick around $120, then again I could be wrong.
For isntance Wii games had a very high price on them, despite Nintendo confirming its games WILL be cheaper than what was shown on websites. I think its little more than speculation, and they make it extra expensive just to make sure.
