Pokemon returns in a new RPG for the DS

September 3rd 2006 07:05

Good ol’ Pokemon is set for release this November on the Nintendo DS as Pokemon Myster Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and will follow the real-time RPG format unlike its predecessors which was turn based. This will be one of the DS’s proper Pokemon RPG titles but has the games series gone long enough? I still remember playing Pokemon Red on my Gameboy Colour back in 1998 and it was exciting back then (especially playing against friend’s trained pokemon).

This game however, does not follow the same game structure as all the other pokemon titles, as the player is ‘trapped’ in the body of an actual pokemon this time around. The player must then explore the pokemon world such as dungeons, and recruit members in their party to fight off enemies. Along the way, power ups and new fighting moves will be learnt which will add variety to the action. Players will still be able to visit the inn, shops and check their mail boxes for new information on other pokemon and rescue missions as side quests.

The title seems interesting enough, the graphics look sharp and colourful and the DS twin display being used well with a map displayed on one screen and the RPG action on the other. I should recommended this title but I really haven’t seen any of the cartoons in a long time and don’t have any reason to expect the fact that the fan base for this series still exists. Perhaps the pokemon card fad has died, along with watching the series every morning without a miss (and possibly missing the first 30min of your first class at school) but the fact that games are still being released for consoles sponsored by Nintendo (and are selling quite well) may be a positive side overall. Expect a heap of advertising for this title to follow soon, and your siblings and other kiddies harassing you to purchase it for them…hey I might even grab a copy for myself!
