Playstation 3 madness…worth dying for?
November 18th 2006 14:17
Sony’s ultimate console went on sale in the US and Japan on November 17th, and it has driven people into a frenzy. There have been multiple stories of armed robbery and physical assaults with thieves trying any means possible to get their hands on the console which is priced at a hefty $1000 AUD.
Here are some news reports taken from CNN:
“3 a.m. when the two gunmen…, confronted 15 to 20 people standing outside a Wal-Mart store and demanded money”
“A shopper was beaten and robbed of his new PlayStation 3 just minutes after he bought it…”
“a man was in critical condition after emergency surgery for a stab wound after he and a friend tried to rob two men of consoles they waited 36 hours in line to buy”
“…two men wearing black ski masks and sunglasses made off with five consoles after holding two employees at gunpoint…”
These reports are what I would expect but did they same thing happen with the Xbox 360? Well not in Japan that is sure where there were stacks of unsold consoles sitting in shops after launch. I am pretty sure when Nintendo’s Wii console is released too – people in the US will not cause such a BIG stir as they did with the PS3. But what makes people so crazy and not wait a month or so for a new batch of consoles?….patience is an essence after all!
Perhaps it was the long long wait that gamers had to endure for the console, or the price which makes it a financial burden for most people who aren’t willing to pay such an excessive price for a games machine. Maybe it is because the PS3 is the choice of consoles over the Xbox 360 and Wii? Are thieves attempting to steal PS3’s for themselves or to sell ‘hot’ for some quick cash? Well the list is endless and Sony in my mind hasn’t lost many fans with the terrible delays of the console! Microsoft’s Xbox 360 game pack looks very tempting (console plus extra controller and 2 games) along with the Wii which is at a much more affordable price ($400 AUD) compared to the PS3.
Well as gamers across the US and Japan who were fortunate enough to get their hands on the console, critics and analysts watch observantly for any flaws and bugs in the console which will be abused as it is the first version of the console (by hackers especially). Moreover…will the PS3 really be worth spending those hard earned dollars for? I will have to wait and see when I ‘try’ to get my hands on one just March here in OZ.
