Play Schumacher one last time on the PS3
March 3rd 2007 08:26
Formula One Championship Edition is one of the few racing titles that are available on the PS3 and it looks quite average to say the least. This title will be released next month by SCEE on the PS3 and PSP only and although looks graphically nice and quick, lacks that ‘edge’ that makes games such as Gran Turismo so memorable.
On the positive side, the game has eye candy! As players zoom around the map in their licensed vehicles with real drivers (including the recently retired Michael Schumacher), the frame rate stays constant and smooth. Rain and sun is also looks very real, with rain making it very difficult for players to see, although adds that extra realism alongside the blinding sun at different angles. Moreover, speed-blur is also prevalent when players hit high levels of speed while racing, along with the rumbling of the car.
On the negative side, the game’s roster is of the 2006 season which will disappoint many fans just before the 2007 season begins. The Sixaxis is also available to be used, but from critic’s point of view- is not as responsive and more difficult to play with then using the analog controls. Racing is stumped with a realistic atmosphere with practice races and qualifying just to get into a race being a bit to tiresome for some. There is also little to no music with a boring commentator repeating the same phrases throughout the entire race.
This game is good, but has its own little downfalls. I would recommend it truly for fans of this racing genre and who like multiplayer racing (up to 11 people), but other than that, save your money for a better racing title (hopefully GT5) which should really push the boundaries of the PS3’s graphical power.
