Play Oregon Trail again!

February 12th 2009 21:56
Several weeks ago, I wrote about the good ol' days playing Oregon Trail on the Apple IIe in elementary school.

Yeah, a while back, when decisions were simple: farmer or banker? Ford or reroute?

It was meant to be an educational game, and I suppose I learned something, though I never understood why we had to leave to go to Oregon, especially if we were the banker. Was it fun?

From Gamespot's history of the game:

"Equal parts adventure and strategy game, Oregon Trail put you in the role of the head of a group of travelers in 1848 who were hoping to make it to the Beaver State, via covered wagon, by following the fabled Oregon Trail. At the beginning, you decided if you wanted to be a banker from Boston, a carpenter from Ohio, or a farmer from Illinois. Then you decided what month of the year you were going to begin your journey and subsequently started stocking up on supplies for the trip. You needed to buy oxen to pull your wagon, sets of clothing for your party members, as much food as you could afford, bullets for the purpose of hunting for more food along the trail, and spare wagon parts in case of a breakdown. Every single purchase and choice made at the beginning of the game played into the strategy of what was to come once you hit the Oregon Trail. "

Was there strategy? Certainly, there must have been - why, then, did we relish the idea of setting a grueling pace, starving family members and fording down the river?

Great times, man.

They've actually remade the game, updating it with better graphics and more minigames, reviewed here on IGN.

But you don't have to buy the game, oh no. Thanks to the magic of digital reproduction, you can play it for free, anytime you want! Thanks to Virtual Apple 4.0, you can play Oregon Trail in your browser!

Otherwise, you can always download the Apple emulator and the disk image for the Oregon Trail.

I forgot to post on your previous Oregon Trail article (oh yes, we lurking Oregon Trail fans)

I played Oregon Trail from a DOS prompt as a text game in 1985. Back when floppies were floppy. How old school am I? (it was actually IN school, 7th grade computer lab)
