Play bowling and tennis with your controller…Wii style!

September 16th 2006 13:30

Nintendo have recently unveiled a heap of info on their upcoming console Wii and this includes a nifty little list of titles to boot. Of these titles, I was particularly drawed to Wii Sports! Wii Sports is essentially a compilation of mini-games which make full use of the wireless motion captured Wii controller. Such games include tennis, bowling, baseball and even golf!

Now as I said earlier, the main selling point of the Wii is of course the controller and Wii Sports shows why. In the tennis game, players will be able to lob and swing at the tennis ball as it approached their character. Moreover, players will be able to put some spin on the ball with a flick of the wrist whilst playing against the computer or another friend who can also use a wireless controller at the same time.

Yep golf as you would imagine will also give the player the ability to put of swing with different speed and direction to achieve various powers. Players will hold the controller in both hands, pointed toward the floor and swing as they would a real golf club. Why pay thousands for a specialised virtual reality golf set when you can have just as much fun with the Wii (well the kids will at least ).

Ten pin bowling is another cool minigame which is simple as it can get. Grab the controller and swing it towards the pins as you would a real ten pin ball. Many gamers might find this a little tacky…but hey it will reduce your chances of having a serious wrist injury (or can gamers get rsi from overuse of the controller…hmmm).

Well this title will be a launch title for the Wii and will come out in November. I would recommend it as a nice party game or as one for the kids. On the otherhand, can emulating an actual sport be as good as the real thing? Of course not…getting out of the house away from video games and getting some exercise is the way to go! This game is only promoting anti-social behaviour! Ahh I will just shut up now…I am only sounding like a hypocrite.

Oh thank god someone gave wii-sports it's own well deserved article. I am so glad I don't have to do it myself now.

Thanks, and a big thumbs up.

Wii sports! The great way to display your Mii! Hehe. It looks like fun, but I'd probably be just as bad at Wii Golf as I am at regular golf.

Well they made it really simple, for instance in Wii tennis you don't control where your player moves, that's done automatically, in Wii golf the putter is always ligned up and it simply is determined by how you angle your shot.

Yep simple as it might be...the element of fun shines! Imagine getting a group of friends around the tele and swinging some shots in golf or trying to hit a home run in baseball.... awesome! I would be curious however on the accuracy of the controller in relation to what is going on in the game!

Nintendo boasts that the hardware is capable of per pixel detection, and looking at wii baseball for instance you can tell as the bat jitters to every bit of motion.

It's up to the programmer though to make it work the way he/she wants at the end though, but the hardware sure is capable.

i have become obsessed with the wii since purchasing it a week ago. my little brother and i play constantly and the wii-mote is very responsive. the only downside is that with games such as tennis and baseball without being able to control the movements of the characters loses a little something.

but, bowling, boxing and golf are just awesome. props for the wii too because it gets people playing who normally wouldn't play video games. my dad even got up and gave it a go and has developed an obsession with the bowling game as well.

Damn it Stan, you're making me want it all the more. Sadly I'll have to stand up to go buy it

Shouldn't be so hard anymore, now that I've finished my schooling duties for the next month and a bit.

Yeah the Wii is awesome! I was playing boxing with my mate...damn tiring. I know i know you can do litle movements with the controller and get the same response but it isnt as fun as moving you're whole body like a boxer!
