PaRappa rappin onto the PSP
September 22nd 2006 08:28
It has been 10 years since the original PaRappa the Rapper appeared on the PSX, and fans who loved the original (and new gamers alike) will be in for a treat when this re-release lands on the PSP by the end of this year (or early next). This is a bizarre game but an enjoyable one to say the least. I set my gaming mitts on this title shortly after it was released on the PSX and it does bring back fond memories…kick chop!
The game essentially plays by button pressing in synchronisation to the music and instructions to what is displayed on the screen. If you played Bust-a-groove or even Dance Dance Revolution, you will understand what I am trying to describe. Players press buttons as they appear, and PaRappa will rap to a beat and progress through mini missions and the plot. You might think it’s a tad boring…but trust me, the music, fancy graphics and pace of the game will keep you hooked.
From what I have read so far, this PSP title will be a remake of the original which is neither bad nor good. On the good side, players who have never played the original and have no clue who PaRappa is, will have the chance to live the ‘rapping’ experience for a first time. On the other hand, fans of the original will be disappointed that this isn’t a new title or be a better one than PaRappa 2 which hit the PS2 some 4 years ago (and was perceived to be a disappointment by many fans).
I would recommend this title, but only if it is set at a budget price and comes with many extras and unlockables that the original never had. In addition, players will probably finish this title very quickly (as I did so long ago) and it might not hold much replay value for many gamers. You decide…fun original gameplay or replay value?
