Nintendo to recall 3.2 million straps
December 16th 2006 07:10
I recently made a post on the problems facing Wii gamers concerning their wrist straps which tend to break. After breaking, the remote would become a dangerous projectile and end up damaging the user’s precious television screen in which was the direction that a bowling bowl from Wii Sports was meant to go (not literally!).
Well Nintendo has acted quickly (and so they should have) and is recalling over 3 million of the weak straps with a replacement to owners at no extra charge. The strap is much thicker and durable which Nintendo hopes will end the strap-breaking problem once and for all. The replacement will be delivered after December 21 this year, with Wii owners responsible for checking the Nintendo website and registering their Wii serial number and details for the new strap.
Nintendo has already taken good measures to ensure all its newly packages Wii consoles will contain the new strap. I am quite happy to see how Nintendo has taken this strap problem as a serious issue and addressed it in such quick timing (although still unfortunate that this problem even existed in the first place!). Moreover, this will surly cost Nintendo a few million dollars to replace the straps, but I still cannot see Wii sales decreasing much. Wii is still selling like hotcakes around the globe and I think Sony and Microsoft should be worried. Gamers are not too fussed about the strap problem which has good signs. On an unrelated note, what about the sensor capabilities of the controller…how long will it maintain its accuracy over time? Surely new technology has its limits…
