New Super Mario Bros!
April 27th 2006 06:02
Yes, finally our beloved Mario is returning in a new (not re-make!) two dimensional, side scrolling adventure for the Nintendo DS. Ahh, finally I can put away my Sony PSP (also capable of playing some homebrew Super Mario All-stars :-] ), and look forward to playing some fresh Mario action on my Nintendo DS…sure I do sound like a spoilt 12 year old
Anyways, the game play follows the same style of the NES version created some 20 years ago – run, jump, stomp on enemies, smack your unbreakable skull on blocks of bricks, gather coins and grow excessively large by eating red mushrooms (how can we forget those mushrooms).
Game play additions also include wall jumps, a ‘bum’ stomp technique allowing Mario to break bricks downwards, along with a wide variety of power ups such as super mushrooms that transform Mario into the size of the DS screen and mini mushrooms which…as you guessed it – shrinks Mario ridiculously small.
Nintendo have also added a two player mode allowing Mario and Luigi to compete against one another, and also a large selection of mini-games involving Mario, his friends and their wild antics. An interesting feature involving the mini games is the use of the Nintendo DS’s stylus. This, in my opinion, has been under utilised by many DS games, and having the stylus being an integral feature of the mini games in the New Mario Bros will be quite refreshing and original.
I can’t wait to get my hands on this title and so you should you! It will be released in the US in May 2006, with European and Australian releases in early June 2006.
Check out the Official Website for game footage and pics.

It's about time they brought back Mario in 2D -- 3D Mario as in the Nintendo 64 just didn't cut it for me. It lost its authenticity.
So you have a Nintendo DS as well as a PSP?! You avid gamer!! What else do you have?

Yep, I have been playing games for a loooooong time now. Started on a Sega Master System when I was 5, then a PSX when I was in high school. Following that the Dreamcast, Xbox then GC
While all that was happening...my computer went through its own stages of online gaming and upgrades.
Yep I do sound like a gaming addict but I have been able to balance it around life! Its become more of a hobby and a good joy to play with friends.

Nice collection of consoles there, Dani. I'm not bad myself and my list includes: Commodore64, Nintendo, SNES, Playstation and PS2. I also had the original Gameboy and Gameboy Advance.
Still weighing up whether I should go for a PSP. As much as I enjoy playing Mario, buying a DS just for that sole reason seems a bit far fetched!

Yeah I agree Stanley, platformers involving classic 2D gaming have long gone. Game companies have opted for 3D engines showing off eye candy. I still think gameplay (even with simple graphics) is what really makes the game addictive and enjoyable
E.g Lunimes on the PSP!
Its good to see another gaming enthusist as yourself Charles! Regarding the purchase of a PSP, it is worth while...but of course costly. If you really want to make the most of it, you will also need to purchase a large memory stick (1-2gb) which will cost you a couple of hundred dollars (be careful of the cheap eBay mem sticks which are fake!). A 2gb sony mem stick duo will cost you in excess of $200! But then again so does an ipod

It's not just the cost of the PSP itself we're talking about here - the accessories like memory sticks, although compatible with other Sony products, i.e. cameras, are expensive.
I think what it really comes down to is how much time I would be spending on a PSP if I ever bought one.
