Midway unleashes Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
May 6th 2006 06:13
Midway have returned with a 7th instalment to its widely popular and controversial video game, Mortal Kombat. Released all the way back in 1993, this gruesome and violent game has followed up with countless sequels, cartoon series and even 2 films!
Put aside the crazy fighting and bucket loads of blood and gore, what is Mortal Kombat really about? The underlying storyline focuses on Realms in a universe which are ruled by Elder Gods. Earth is one of these Realms and a special one since it can be used as a ‘gateway’ into other Realms. Resultantly evil forces (such as Shao Kahn) wish to take over Earth in an invasion from the Outworld. In response, the greatest warriors from Earth must fight in an honourable tournament called Mortal Kombat in order to stop this from happening (which is moderated by the Elder Gods). Phew!
Now that we have the storyline out of the way, we can discuss the main elements of the game. Straight out of the box, this title comes with the general fighting modes (including practice and multiplayer modes), konquest and character a fighter mode.
What is most impressive about this title is the inclusion of over 60 player characters which stem all the way to the original title that was released on the Sega Genesis (also known as the Mega Drive). Additionally, a wide selection of levels have also been ported over to this title in full three dimension fighting arenas, including the subway in MK3 and even Goro’s layer in MK1.
Fighting controls remain similar to the recent instalments of the game including MK Deception and Deadly Alliance. Players will still have 2 fight stances and the ability to use weapons to wound and hurt their opponents. Interestingly, the fatality system has been altered into a new style that might annoy some classic MK gamers.
Fatalities, which can are used to ‘finish off’ opponents who have lost, allow gamers to pull of a range of button combinations that result in a grisly decapitation or gory beat-up of the opponent. This time around, players will be able to combine one linking move to another in a range of custom made fatalities according to the speed and accuracy of certain moves. This can prove rewarding to both professionals and new comers to the game alike, with added flexibility to how a match should end.
Konquest mode returns which pits gamers into a mini adventure game following the plot line of Mortal Kombat. Although this might not be as expansive and specialised as the recent release of MK Shaolin Monks, it adds more value to the title and a change in game play for those who need to take a break from fighting in an arena.
Midway have also added a character creation mode to this action packed title. This is very initiative since players can now create their own custom fighter with different weapons, fighting styles and play them against their friends and even in the traditional MK tournament!
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon should be released in 4th quarter of 2006, so Xbox and PS2 fans can rejoice again with an epic title that could possibly be the last title in the series!
