Metal Slug 2006…in 3D?!

June 30th 2006 13:46

Yes…seems strange doesn’t it. This franchise of button bashing side scrolling created by SNK Playmore has made its way from its traditional 2D structure into a 3D world. My question is…will this be a good or bad move for the series?

If you have never played Metal Slug before, it’s basically a side scrolling game whereby players can play in teams or by themselves against a horde of enemies with machine guns and grenades. The action is fast paced and the screen gets overloaded with enemies, bullets and explosions. Adrenaline rushing and finger tiring…this game is a favourite among many in the arcades and on consoles.

The 3D version of the game which is out now in Japan for the Playstation 2 does look rather unusual. Perhaps this is due to the transition to the 3D structure of the game. Characters do still have those big heads of those and carrying guns 3 times their size…but I still think the 2D element is what sells the game. The graphics in the game also don’t look that fancy and look quite blocky and rushed. It feels like the game is taking more of an adventure action game feel, which doesn’t really follow the side scrolling 2D structure which I loved personally.

So why are they following the 3D structure? Capcom have been producing plenty of 2D Street Fighting games for years now and they still sell like hotcakes (although there has also been a transition to 3D for the Street Fighter series). In my opinion, as long as the game is enjoyable and addictive for what it does, then why try to follow the crowd and join the 3D eye candy market.

The game still doesn’t have a release date confirmed for outside Japan, with publishers probably waiting to see whether the game is profitable at all in 3D. Maybe I am all wrong about this and the game will be quite fun, but I still follow the principal that the Metal Slug series was designed to be played in the original 2D format.

These pictures were taken from the Official website of the game.
