Mario Party 8 removed off shelves!
July 21st 2007 14:44
Believe or not...Mario Party 8 is being pulled off the shelves in the United Kingdom following an offensive comment made in the game by a character. Kamek the blue Wizard makes the following statement which was deemed offensive:
"Magikoopa magic! Turn the train spastic! Make this ticket tragic!". As you can see - the world 'spastic' was stated which caused Nintendo to pull the game of the shelves for a re-release. For those who don't know what this word means, it implies a mental disability when used in a slur, but also relates to the symptoms of cerebral palsy.
This word is also used in Australia and can also be deemed offensive. However, with the release of this title on the 19th of July (2 days ago), Australians have the edited version which does not have this comment. Rest assured there will be no recall of the game here, along with US gamers who are not directly affected by the comment as the word spastic is not used in such an offensive context.
Was it a good idea to recall and re-release the game? I think so, as Nintendo is showing the public that they are serious with releasing family orientated games without such language. This might be a publicity stunt but it has worked well in favor of Nintendo's 'clean' family orientated image which has made Nintendo a long running family household name.
