Lemmings have returned!
April 25th 2006 12:03
Published by Psygnosis in 1991, Lemmings was initially released for the Amiga and was highly acclaimed for its puzzle solving elements and quirky style.
The main aim of the game is to help 100 little green haired beings called ‘lemmings’ find their way home in somewhat dangerous, frustrating and downright perplexing maps (I might be exaggerating a bit since there were some easy maps too).
In order to guide the lemmings to a safe home, players would be given a range of tools and abilities including the ability to deploy parachutes, build bridges, dig tunnels, and self terminate lemmings – all in order to create a path to freedom.
I used to love this game when I was young, however was dismayed to see that the lemming’s franchise had become long forgotten with Psygnosis being bought out by Sony Entertainment and lost its title in 1999.
Was I mistaken when Team 17, the makers of the highly popular Worm’s series, took the lead seat in turning back the clock on the Lemmings empire, and releasing a remake of the original game for the Sony PSP. The game features all the 120 levels from the original, plus an additional 36 maps created by Team 17 and a level editor for games to produce their own maps for the lemmings to explore! Moreover, Team 17 has created a pre-rendered 3D landscape, but kept the game play in 2D in respect to the original title.
Team 17 has also done a good job with utilising the PSP control pad, with the shoulder buttons used for scrolling between lemming’s jobs, the D-pad used to move the cursor around the screen, and analog stick to move through the map.
Lemmings will be released in the US on the 1st May, 2006 – following the Japanese release date of the 9th March 2006, and Europe (and Australian) release date of the 10th March 2006.
