Left 4 Dead labelled the 'peak' of zombie gaming

Zombies are great enemies in video games: they're undead, so it doesn't bother you to shoot them, they're fatigueless, so it makes sense that they just keep coming, and, we assume, there are always more of them.
Jim Rossignol wrote an article in GiantRealm gushing over the fantastic zombie gameplay in Left 4 Dead, a highly anticipated mutliplayer shooter from Valve.

Rossignol knows what he's talking about when it comes to video games, but he appreciates that Left 4 Dead tries to be more than just a video game, combining pop culture references to the zombie genre with fast-shootin' action:
Left 4 Dead uses the 'new' kind of zombies - the fast ones used in the "Dawn of the Dead" remake. While fast zombies take some of the effect out of the cinema, Rossignol finds that they are fantastically implemented in the game, providing some great adrenaline rushes...
"But it's the buddy-system game mechanics that makes the game so compelling. Having to rely on other people to save you from the zombies once you're pinned or fallen, or charging across the ruined spaces to do some of the saving yourself - well, that's as dramatic as gaming gets..."
Rossignol claims that Left 4 Dead might be the pinnacle of the zombie gaming movement, and we'll see imitators, sure, but nothing that'll approach the perfection of this game.
I don't have an XBOX, so I suppose I'll have to wait until one of my friends gets it, and lets me play, uninterrupted, for several hours. I'm counting down the days...
Here's some terrifying gameplay footage that shows just how frantic things can get...

"It's a thrilling, unsettling, vital piece of gaming. It's also culturally rich: It draws on zombie movies and bombards us clever references and little moments of comedy or horror in the game world."
