King of Fighters Neowave Xbox review

May 23rd 2006 10:26

King of Fighters (KOF) has been around for quite a while now and being ported to consoles seems to have taken forever (alas the Dreamcast acquired the title long ago). KOF follows a similar fighting game structure to the classic 2D fighting series of Street Fighter created by Capcom and proves to be a popular and competitive game in arcades.

The significant differences of KOF to Street Fighter is of course the characters, ‘rushed like’ graphics, and the team based selection which enables players to choose a team of 3 players and head it off until one player has all their characters defeated (Street Fighter has this option is some of its titles as well but KOF imposes this as compulsory). One aspect of KOF which I liked was the lengthy and complicated combos which make the game quite fast and tactical.

This time around, KOF is on the Xbox with the additional online mode which will open up new doors to players who wish to challenge other players across the world. For those players who couldn’t be beaten in the arcades, now you can challenge another professional in perhaps Japan or even the United States!

A character count of 43 are available to be played with in this title, however the game feels like an ‘upgraded’ version of the King of Fighters 2002. The graphics still feel run down and jagged (and for its age and the current hardware available to play the game this is truly a disappointment) with maps and sound remaining the same.

Control wise, the game remains almost the same as its previous titles with the traditional 4 button combinations (low kick, high kick, low punch, high punch) but this time with an extra button which allows the player to go into ‘heat’ mode – making the character stronger, but decreases the player’s health over time. Three fighting modes are also included; max2, guard break and super cancel.

Overall the game plays fast, with the additional online mode which will keep this title alive as players will not have to go to the arcade to look for a challenge, but do so in the comfort of their own home. This title would be suited to KOF fans, however 2D fighting game fans should also give this title a go since it is also priced relatively cheap.

It is out now on the Xbox.
