Father of the Sony Playstation sacked…PS3 signaling doom?
April 30th 2007 12:48
After Sony dropped 15% in its share price and essentially $5billion out of the company’s doors last week, Sony has told the creator of the PS3 (and previous Playstation consoles), Ken Kutaragi that he has to go. On June 19 this year he will step down from the position of chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment which marks a massive blow to Sony but opens new doors for restructuring during this competitive gaming age.
With the Wii sales soaring and Xbox 360 following closely behind, the PS3 has launched rather poorly. Extreme delays in release, excessive price tag, limited range of titles and buggy playback of PS2 games have all contributed to this. People are now asking the question of why Blu-ray was even included in the console in the first place. If Blue-ray was an additional component (similar to the HD-drive of the Xbox 360), then Sony could have sold the PS3 at a much lower price. Surely this would have boosted sales and decreased the timespan it took to release the console in the first place.
Poor Ken - setting the big stones for Sony as they unleashed the Playstation 1 so long ago which dominated the market for so long – followed with the record breaking console the PS2, and now he is no more. I wonder what plans Sony have and who will fill Ken’s role in order to take on the big Nintendo and Microsoft in the new gaming era where Sony is not in control anymore.
