Half-Life mixed with Fear: S.T.A.L.K.E.R

November 23rd 2006 08:06

Five long years in the making and THQ is set to release a blockbuster first person shooter on the PC early next year called S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl. This game is set in the Ukraine following a second Chernobyl nuclear disaster where mutants are formed, the military is trying to cover it up, and stalkers are out on a mission to find out what has happened after the nuclear disaster. The player essentially plays a stalker and must do just that – find out what hidden secrets lie in the disaster zone.

Being a ‘stalker’, players must use their stealth tactics or all out attacking skills to find ‘artifacts’ which will give them special weapons, clues and items to progress in the game. They must avoid being killed by mutants and military which are stationed in the zone. Interestingly, the game plays in an RPG fashion, where players can only hold a certain amount of items and can do mini side quests which can tally up the game including the original storyline to over 30 hours! Moreover, there are 7 endings which will be determined on who the player kills and paths taken in the storyline.

A key feature of this game is “A-Life Technology”. This feature essentially controls 1000 AI members in the game which draws them into battle against each other. For example, when one side is losing a battle, more enemies will back each other up in order to win the fight. At night, mutants and military take rest, whilst stalkers begin roaming the zones and even setting up camp fires to sing and dance. But they aren’t safe, with mutants with shadowing abilities (similar to the Predator) wrecking havoc as well!

This game will certainly give a lot of people the freaks especially with the ‘A-Life Technology’ which is one reason the game has been in development for so long. Moreover, the multiplayer mode looks fantastic with players choosing sides of the various groups in the game and either taking stealth moves or fighting tactics to defeat their enemies. Let’s see if this game really lives up to its expectations next year (Could be a game of the year!).
