GTA rip off? = Saints Row

On its way to the Xbox 360 next month, THQ is releasing what seems to be a GTA clone. Players begin the game by creating their character from head to toe, including jewellery and clothing and are placed within a large city which is unbelievably controlled by racially segregated gangs. Deja vu anyone? Take-two released Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (and the other GTA series) a while ago which basically followed the same gameplay that this game produces.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since Saints Row will in fact feature on the Xbox 360 long before GTA 4 is released. Having said that, gamers eagerly awaiting their GTA ‘fix’ will be treated to this title which at the end of the day patches up the areas which the GTA series might of missed. Missions usually follow the same sequence as that of GTA with players having to kill this or that person, or steal this or that car, but gang warfare on an ‘epic’ front is a feature in this game. For example, players will have the opportunity to stop their current mission and help their fellow gang members in a gang war somewhere in the city. Although this has been done in the GTA series, Saints Row looks to make it more memorable with very large fights which will show the technical and graphical power of the Xbox 360.
So another game joins the ever-growing list of mindlessly violent games which somewhat condone gang behaviour. I predict that there will be public uproar (basically parents and politicians) opposing this game due to its violent nature, but on the other hand this ‘uproar’ is usually reserved for Take-two, the developers of the GTA series. If in fact this game performs poorly in the sales department and invedtabley becomes a flop, I don’t think there will be much commotion (interesting to see to many violent games on the market which don’t really cause a stir in the media).
At the end of the day, I would like to give this title a go just to see how the multiplayer elements of the game work out and what improvements have been made over the GTA series. On that note, the GTA developers will get a run for their money and will hopefully produce an excellent title which will undoubtedly overlook Saints Row when GTA 4 is released sometime next year.
