GTA Japanese Style - Sega's Yakuza

May 19th 2006 11:00

On almost every gaming platform a mafia style game has been released and has grabbed the attention of both gamers and the media alike. Gamers enjoy the pursuit of running an illegal empire that forces street control using violence and gang like tactics, whereas the media (and classification office) attempts to brand and censor the game by labelling them a bad influence to society by stimulating negative, violent and anti-social behaviour.

Sega has done just that and is planning to release Yakuza for the Playstation 2 in what looks like an epic title on par with Sega’s masterpiece Shenmue. Essentially, the game imitates the real life Yakuza who run an intricate and highly dangerous mafia in Japan.

Players who have played Shenmue (released on Sega’s Dreamcast console) will feel at home with the controls and gameplay mechanics. Characters in the game will room freely in the streets of Shinjuku – a modern city like environment where Yakuza members congregate. Battles will follow hand to hand combat, allowing players to perform combos and even use weapons to defeat their opponents. Players will also be confronted with a multitude of enemies and will have to fend them off Bruce Lee style.

This game looks quite violent and will look to cause some controversy similar to that of Take Two’s Grand Theft Auto series. None the less, after viewing the official trailer of the game I felt that this game will be of blockbuster calibre and appeals to an older/mature audience.

For a change from Italian mafia games – I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of some Eastern flare when this game is released in September 2006.

why doesn't oz's conservative censors just have a 'r' rated category for games? it's time they stop the arcane belief that games are for kids when the average age of gamers is somewhere in the mid-20s!

I agree with you Stanley- Australia should have an 'R' rating. But when you look at the bigger picture, some gaming publishers would prefer a lower rating on their title to sell the game to a wider audience.
On the other hand, it would be more beneficial to adult gamers (a high percentage who actually purchase the games) and the economy alike if an 'R' rating was in place, since this would also deter the import and piracy of games.

Nice review there, Dani! Sounds like a cool game that GTA fans would love!

Sega is the first software developer to invent the open environment. i.e. Shenmu this game isn't copying GTA at all. The actual fact is people at rockstar probably got their idea from the first Shenmu.
