Get Over It

One of Australia’s most respected gaming journalists, Jason Hill, featured an article on his blog Screen Play discussing his thoughts on backwards compatibility and how it relates to the release of the PS3 Slim in Australia tomorrow.
“But as Screen Play has said many times in the past, backward compatibility is not about playing old games, it is about ensuring consumer goodwill and loyalty.”
It’s not.
It is about being able to play old games on your new system so you have more room on your entertainment display. Jason also pasted the top 500 PS2 games from Metacritic and highlighted the ones he was likely to play again. Some of the titles I agree with like Metal Gear Solid, Jak and Daxter and SingStar but some like Lego Batman and Lego Indiana Jones were available on the 360 and PS3 at the same time – why wouldn’t you just pick up these versions?
There’s a pretty simple solution to the backwards compatibility issue – plug in your PS2.
There’s no shame in doing it. The Gaming Enema segment we’re running as multiple PS2 titles in the mix. I will be playing these games on the PS2 and not on my PS3. Am I annoyed about it? No. Do I wish I was playing these games on the PS3? Not really. Sure the wireless controller would be nice but I don’t expect any of my PS2 games to be upscaled.
I’d rather play PS3 games on my PS3. The only reason I would play a PS2 game is for this segment or if I’m feeling nostalgic and I don’t imagine that feeling to be forever lasting. If you have both systems then odds are you’ll be playing your PS3 for the majority of the time. I don’t think anyone who has a PS3 will be splurging on PS2 titles and if they want to revisit one of the older games in their collection then I’m sure they’re not crying a river when playing it on a PS2.
Surely after two years of having no backwards compatibility on the PS3 people would be over it by now – if not then maybe now is the time.
