Daikatana would eventually be delayed for years, putting out awful demos, messing up at conventions, and then, finally, when it was released, was rather mediocre with awful gameplay.
Romero is a wisp of the industry leader that he once was.
A quote that brings me fond memories:
The opening line from the Fallout series of games... dire and spooky, they'd lead you into a game that has been universally praised as one of the best of all time. Fallout gave you choices, and then changed the world based on those choices. It was engrossing to play, but also to play again.
