Big Brain Academy is an original and interesting Nintendo DS game which utilises the stylus and the touch sensitive screen of the DS and tests the player’s reaction and thinking skills within a limited time frame. Essentially, the game is full of brainteasers which start at a simple level and eventually reach an advanced level of difficulty. As you progress within the game, you will be given a final score as your ‘brain pattern’ is calculated.
This game is for all ages, including adults and is easy to pick up and play. The game developers at Nintendo have stated that playing this game makes you ‘smarter’, which in my opinion is a gimmick to sell the game. Perhaps the game will increase your reflex time and memorisation skills, but to make you more intelligent may be an overstatement.
The brainteasers in the game are categorised by think, memorise, analyse, identify and compute which must all be completed to gather the final figures in calculating your mental skill and brain weight! Some examples of minigames include calculating sums and multiplication numbers in the compute category, whereas memorising patterns and graphics and reselecting them afterwards to check your memory skills.
Priced quite cheaply compared to other full priced games, Big Brain Academy is limited with its replay ability and may get boring quickly. However, I would recommend this game for both adults and children alike with its refreshing game and original idea far away from all those violent and typical games available on most consoles these days.
