An English version of Naruto finally hits the PS2

June 7th 2006 14:39

Naruto is a very popular manga created by Masashi Kishimoto and has captured the anime world with its lengthy TV-series. The span of the series can be compared to that of the Dragon Ball series which was also widely popular. Being so popular, gamers out there have yearned for a game to play which relates to the show. There have been a handful of fighting games released on consoles lately that have been based on the Dragon Ball series - so where are the Naruto games? Well Naruto fans have been blessed with Naruto: Ultimate Ninja which is heading to the PS2 (in English translation of course).

The game is essentially a fighting game with similarity to Super Smash Bros. on the Gamecube. Players can choose their favourite characters from the series including Sakura, Haku, Kakashi and none other than Naruto himself. Whilst fighting, players can move between backgrounds (by flying for example) and execute a variety of manoeuvres such as a standard attack, combination of attacks (including the use of projectiles) and a special attack which is activated once the player’s attack meter is charged. The special attack is interesting as it reminds me of the fatality sequence in Mortal Kombat where the player must input a series of button combinations to successfully initiate a devastating attack –of which is implemented similarly in Naruto: Ultimate Ninja.

There is a nice range of gameplay modes such as the story, mission and battle mode which allows players to verse their friends in a multiplayer arena. By completing more missions, players will also be rewarded by being given cash to purchase items and unlock secret players. This will keep players entertained when they complete the individual story line component of the game and increase the lifespan of the title.

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja has been receiving positive views from gamers (and fans) around the world with Namco in association with Bandai having produced an excellent title without tarnishing the Naruto brand name as many other poor game-based-on-tv-shows have done in the past.

Look out for this title when it is officially released at the end of June this year on the Playstation 2.
