A BIG Marvel package approaching…

September 26th 2006 12:08

Marvel Ultimate Alliance will herald the new step in the Marvel franchise of games, and hopefully this title will prove worthy of playing. Activision along with Raven Software will be releasing this title in November and have stated that it will hold over 140 official Marvel characters! Moreover, this title will be available on almost every console, including handhelds, current-gen and new-gen consoles. Big names, big list of characters but what is all the hype about?

I asked the same question and I think it’s just about the brand name: Marvel. Putting Spiderman, the X-Men, and Fantastic Four (to name a few) into multiple teams in a progressive storyline of button bashing and combo making gameplay is the selling point for this new title (well I think!). Players will also be able to play alongside their friends with gameplay played in the third perspective (think of Tomb Raider gameplay) and cooperatively online or offline.

I’m not really hyped about this title as I have seen countless numbers of Marvel titles become flops. Amazingly, people still purchase and play them giving Activision more reasons to keep putting them on the market. One game I really loved (and still do) is Capcom’s X-Men vs. Streetfighter which placed Marvel characters in fighting combat against Streetfighter’s. Sadly, Capcom lost the contract to the Marvel brand and that’s why we see Activision taking the main role in distributing Marvel games. The premise of seeing Marvel Ultimate Alliance released on sooo many consoles also begs the question…how much quality will be reduced and increased between the varieties of the ports on different consoles. This seems like a money grab to capture the largest amount of market share as possible and to me might show that Activision is focusing too heavily on releasing the title on all the consoles, instead of a single one with perfection gameplay (well almost). I mean, look at the Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid and Gran Turismo series which were all released exclusively on a single console and made whole use of the console’s hardware.

Argh…we will just have to wait and see what comes of this title and whether it will capture gamers or just annoy them.
