Game On - December 2008

Boomblox
Jim Rossignol is one of my favourite gaming critics, with a keen eye for the impact of games, as well as boyish enthusiasm for raw thrills. His artilce in Offworld.com describes ten awesome gaming moments from 2008, and, as we've come to expect from Jim, it's an interesting, introspective list.

For example, he spoils a little bit and gives us this video from Fallout 3, which included this moment of sheer ludicrous gaming:

Other moments he describes are entertaining enough: realizing that Spore was less interesting to him, a gamer, than to his girlfriend, who enjoyed tinkering with the creature creator and game mechanics. Sure, it felt lightweight to most of us, but there are enough people buying the game, I suspect.

As for myself, I can't really comment on anything, as I haven't played any of the new games this year, stuck for time, encumbered with a low-end laptop and the lack of a PS3/XBox. Where is my mysterious benefactor?

What I look forward to, I guess, is that, in 5 years, these games will be discounted and available for free download, without DRM.

Jim also points us to the World of Goo trailer, an incredible looking game with fantastic reviews. I'd love to play this game, which reviewers say is one of the most solid, easily learned games around, with addictive gameplay and invigorating music. Bring it on, 2012.

To many people, gaming seems, perhaps, that it's lost the way, with most games being pumped out by big studios and others seemingly mundane... there's enough of an undercurrent, though, to keep Jim in the game until 2010...

Grand Theft Auto IV Bridge
l
Grand Theft Auto IV was a massively popular game when it came out for the Playstation and XBox platforms - PC gamers were left mumbling in spiteful tongues about Rockstar Games, claiming that they made the game what it was.

Nethack KDE 4.1 Console
If you've got Ubuntu running on your computer, with a simple command, you can be playing Nethack in, er, seconds. Well, 30 seconds, probably.

Nethack is easily installed by typing

Crysis screenshot

I'm generally a fierce opponent of Microsoft and their ill-conceived products, but this announcement about Windows 7 has me nodding along: Windows 7 will feature a software layer to allow computers with no graphics card to play Crysis!

Pinning problems on video games

Videogames cause violence

Yep, we're all used to video games being the black sheep of the moment. Right now, the claim of choice seems to be that playing video games will turn you into a killer. A desperate, trenchcoat wearing villain!

Rome: Total War is giving me a headache

Rome Total War Campaign Map

I posted a few videos of the upcoming Empire: Total War PC game, but all they did was remind me how much I loved Rome: Total War, and that I really wanted to play it again.
